ON LAKE COMO
Villa del Balbianello is with no doubts one of the most famous and distinctive locations on Lake Como. The villa is located in Lenno, in the Province of Como, on the tip of the peninsula Lavedo. Built in 1787 for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini as a holiday resort and and a literary workplace, over the centuries has hosted some of the most important figures in Italian art and literature, including Silvio Pellico, Giovanni Berchet, Alessandro Manzoni and Giuseppe Giusti. It was bought in 1974 by the explorer Guido Monzino, who died in 1988, and left Villa del Balbianello to the FAI (Fondo Ambiente Italiano, the National Trust of Italy), that still today maintains and preserves the villa, as a part of its heritage. Thanks to its wonderful views on Lake Como and its distinctive gardens part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani, Villa del Balbianello is often chosen not only as a travel destination, but also as a location for wonderful weddings and events. Recently, Villa del Balbianello has recently become, as in the past, a destination for art: international movie directors chose it as a unique location for several movies, including Martin Campbell’s Casino Royale and George Lucas’ Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
