INFORMATION, NEWS AND CURIOSITIES
ON LAKE COMO
One of the most iconic attractions of Como is the funicular that connects the cities of Como and Brunate. The funicular was built in 1894 to reach the otherwise isolated village of Brunate, often called "balcony of the Alps", thanks to the wonderful panoramic view it offers, extending from the Western Alps and Monte Rosa to the Po Valley and Milan. The funicular is still used today, and its unicity, together with the amazing view, made it an important tourist attraction. An interesting fact about the Como-Brunate funicular is the midday cannon: in 1912, Pro Como decided to signal noon to the citizens of Como, so it recovered and old Austrian cannon, standing halfway through the journey to the top, so that it could fire every single day at noon. The "midday cannon" tradition survived until recent times.
